Aspopyrgos
PHOTOGRAPHY, 2021
These photographs document the farewell of Nikos Sabanis, an 18-year-old Roma boy killed by police gunfire in Perama, Athens, in October 2021. Taken at his family’s home in Aspropyrgos, the images record the presence of relatives and friends during the days of mourning. My lens focuses on the faces, movements, and silences of a community confronting systemic neglect and state violence. The photographs do not seek to dramatize mourning but to register its presence. Rather than turning grief into spectacle, they observe the atmosphere of loss and the persistence of life within it. Within this fragile continuity, this series stands as a record of endurance, memory, and the demand for visibility and justice.
